Potato People Party!

Potatoes and birthday parties? You may be thinking french fries and potato salad but I’m thinking POTATO CRAFTS.  Potatoes make some pretty awesome art and are so inexpensive… which makes them perfect for a low-budget party activity. The kiddos are going to love this! Did you know that potatoes are just one of the many vegetables that can be used as a stamp? Ever cut into a stalk of celery? Well, look at the base next time, it makes a beautiful flower stamp. Back to potatoes though… all you need to do is cut one in half and you have two blank stamps ready to carve your own special design into. And, thanks to the beloved Potato Head character we all fell in love with as kids, you have the opportunity to add whatever you desire to make the potato unique and life-like!

All you need for this birthday craft is:

  • Potatoes
  • Carving tools (melon ballers, knives, pumpkin carving tools, spoons, whatever you want!)
  • Paint
  • Foam brushes
  • Whatever thingamajigs you want to add to your potato head (I used matches for hair, pipe cleaners, thumb tacks, etc.)
  • Paper
  • Garbage bags can be used as smocks if you’re worried about guests getting paint on themselves

Depending on the age group of the kids, you may need to supervise if knives are being used to make the stamp. After the stamp is made and before the painting begins, give your potatoes personality sticking whatever the heck you want on them to make them the hottest potato at the party. When that’s done, apply paint to the bottom of the potato and start stamping away! You can get big rolls of paper from IKEA that are really inexpensive if there is one nearby. I’m thinking that would make some pretty awesome WRAPPING PAPER.

I hope you have a lot of fun with your potato people and it inspires you to enjoy the birthday day in a stress-free and low-cost way. Birthday parties should promote creativity, teamwork, and togetherness. Potato people are the answer and will make everyone giggle and shine bright!
