Thin Ice Game – It’s Frozen Fun!

It has come to my attention that having ‘Frozen’ themed birthday parties is something kids are really into these days. I have yet to see the movie but somehow know all the words to that song… ‘Let it go! Let it go-oh!’ Anyway, from what I have witnessed, these parties tend to be highly detailed and overly fancy. They don’t have to be! You are planning a party for your little one based on their favorite movie. They’re going to think that’s pretty amazing no matter what. ‘Frozen’ makes me think of ice. So, I took a game that I used to play when I was younger (Thin Ice) and found a way to re-create it using supplies I had just laying around at home. The objective of the game is to not be the player who makes the ice break! Incorporate this into your ‘Frozen’ themed birthday party and you’ll be the ‘coolest’ host around. Ha!

What you need:

  • 2 cups
  • Marbles (10ish to be safe) – if you don’t have these, they sell pouches of them at the Dollar Store!
  • Tissues/paper towels/toilet paper
  • A rubber band/hair tie
  • Water

2 -3 players should play at a time. Have the children who are not playing yet be spectators, scorekeepers, or you can set up different stations with multiple cups so everyone can play at the same time. Place the marbles into a cup filled slightly with water. You’ll want enough water to coat the marbles. Set aside. Now, place the tissue over the top of the empty glass and secure it with the rubber band so that the tissue becomes tight around the top (see photos above). Moving clockwise, have the players take turns grabbing a water-soaked marble and placing it carefully on the tissue. The youngest player goes first. Keep taking turns until someone breaks the ice (or tissue)!

Keep score: The first time a player makes the marbles fall through, the scorekeeper writes the letter “I” next to that player’s name. The second time it happens to the same player, that player gets a “C”. The third time the marbles fall through on that player, that player gets an “E”. As soon as a player gets ICE, they’re out of the game. Keep playing the game until there is only one player left who hasn’t broken through the ice three times.

Any way you can incorporate something into a party that you know your child will love, you should! Birthday parties are about celebrating the lives of the birthday boy or girl. This may be the party they will remember forever. Why not make it amazing by inviting their friends and family, playing fun games, talking about their favorite movie, and singing ‘Let it go!’ as loud as you can at the top of your lungs?
